FBG Players of the Week

Slumpbuster@fantasybaseballgeeks.com   - 4/14/2008

Each week, from now to the end of the season, you can check in right here to find out the Fantasy Baseball Geeks weekly award winners for top performers in hitting and pitching categories.

With Week 2, hours away from being in the books, I have poured over the numbers and am proud to present to you this week's winners.

Hitter of the Week

At the age of 35, and possibly one of the least sexy picks of your draft, Raul Ibanez continues to produce solid fantasy numbers. Averaging 25 homeruns and over 100 RBI the last 3 seasons, he was probably passed over for more flashy players or high profile rookies but he should not have been ignored. This past week (I should note here that Sunday games will not be figured in) Ibanez hit .364 with 4 HR, 8 RBI, and 7 R.

Having said that, I'm giving the nod to Albert Pujols . Putting to rest any questions about his nagging elbow and hitting in the middle of the preseason pick to finish last, Cardinals lineup, Pujols had a great week by anyone's standards. It was close with Ibanez, but a .416 AVG to go along with 3 HR, 7 RBI, 7 R, and 1 take-it-when-you-can-get-it SB give him the edge.

Pitcher of the Week

Dan Haren was great in his two starts this past week. Twelve punch-outs in 12 innings, 2 wins, and an ERA and WHIP of 1.50 and 1.08 will make him the stud of any team's rotation but I think he was just barely edged out by Cole Hamels.

Also with 2 wins, Hamels had fewer K's, with 9 in 14 innings, but I can't ignore a 0.64 ERA and 0.79 WHIP. The scary part for opposing batters was the quote from his manager, Charlie Manuel, who said, "He's been doing real good, but I think he's going to get better." With a matching ERA and WHIP of 0.82 on the season, that's music to a fantasy owner's ears
